Clearwater is a city on the west coast of Florida. Clearwater Beach is officially a part of Clearwater and borders the Gulf of Mexico. As a whole, Clearwater is home to approximately 110,000 people. A few famous residents include wrestler Hulk Hogan, actress Kristie Alley, stuntman Evil Knievel and Lisa Marie Presley. Former singer Jim Morrison is a former resident.
Clearwater is often referred to as a part of the Tampa area, which includes Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Of those three cities, Clearwater is the smallest. Many residents work in nearby Tampa. This is an easy and scenic commute, but that wasn't always the case. Prior to 1849, there was no road connecting these two cities, which meant a day-long commute for most people. Clearwater is also a popular vacation destination, which is evident by the population boom that takes place in the winter on an annual basis.
The city of Clearwater came into existence early in the 19th Century when it was used as an army outpost. In 1842, the population grew because the government was offering 160 acres who anyone who moved to the area and cultivated the land. Anyone who took that offer at the time made fortunes for future generations. In 1888, the passenger railroad also became a factor, and the city's population grew even more. The city of Clearwater, however, didn't become a vacation destination until 1897, which is when the Belleview Biltmore hotel opened.
The biggest population booms for Clearwater took place between 1910 and 1930, and between 1950 and 1960. In recent years, the population has remained steady. This might come as a surprise to many people due to the area's popularity as a vacation destination. Many people fail to realize that these aren't full-time residents. If you visit Clearwater during non-peak times, you will not find a bustling city.
Many people get Clearwater and Clearwater Beach confused. While they're right next to each other, they still have many differences. Clearwater Beach consists mostly of hotels, condos, restaurants, attractions and the beach. To get to Clearwater Beach from Clearwater, you must drive on a large, arcing and beautiful causeway that travels over the Gulf of Mexico.
Clearwater itself still has a lot to offer, including its own beaches, public art scene, theatre scene and fishing. The most popular route traveled through Clearwater is US 19, which can have as many as 100,000 vehicles pass in one day during peak season. The only form of public transportation in Clearwater is a bus.
Downtown Clearwater is another popular area, which is known for its high-rise condos, marina and Cleveland Street District. Many young adults choose to move to this area due to the activity and the area's trendiness.
